A number of groups and committees throughout the region are discussing various elements related to flood recovery in Minot and the Souris River Basin.

The following committees were part of the conversation happening in the Magic City in 2011. These committees are being reavaluated by the Mayor with structure and design for 2012 yet to be determined:

Mayor's Flood Recovery Committee - led by former mayor, Orlin Backes, a group of citizen volunteers, city leaders and members of the public met once a week to discuss ideas or recommendations that came out of subcommittees. The Flood Recovery Committee met in the City Council Chambers on most Wednesdays at 7:30 a.m. Traffic, infrastructure and protections plans are being handled by current employees, consultants or engineers.
  • Housing Subcommittee met in the Westlie Room, MSU Student Center on most Tuesdays at 7:30 a.m. The committee chairs were Connie Feist and Jim Jensen.

The following groups or Boards are also part of the conversations taking place regarding flood recovery in Minot and throughout the Souris Basin:

  • Souris River Joint Water Resources Board - The Souris River Joint Board is made up of representatives from the four counties that lie within the Souris Basin: Bottineau, McHenry, Renville and Ward. The board is the lead agency in developing a flood control plan for the entire basin. Shortly after the Mouse River flood of 2011, the Joint Board asked Governor Dalrymple for assistance in developing flood protection for the entire basin in North Dakota. The North Dakota State Water Commission took on this task, with the Joint Board as the sponsoring agency.
  • North Dakota State Water Commission - The Water Commission was asked to assist in preparing a Preliminary Engineering Report that includes an alignment plan that can be used for property acquisitions. The ND Governor is the chairman of this Commission.
  • International Souris River Board - This board is a standing board that is under the International Joint Commission, an independent bi-national organization that is responsible for a variety of concerns, including boundary waters, like the Mouse/Souris River. One of the Souris River Board's mandates is to comply with the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909.
